Preamble
Family Medicine is the backbone of primary health care delivery all over the world and has evolved as a specialised version of traditional general practice. However, it is yet to develop as a Specialist discipline in Bangladesh. Although it is encouraging to note that the government has finally been moving towards restructuring General Practice and streamline a referral system. On the other hand, a vast number of young doctors are unable to get in to the traditionally developed specialities. This created a window of opportunity for the development of Family Medicine as a specialist discipline in Bangladesh. A short course in Family Medicine can provide the aspirant practitioners to step into the discipline before deciding to go for full specialist training. It can enhance their knowledge and skill as improved General Practitioners. To fill the opportunity, a Certificate in Family Medicine (CFM) is offered by BUHS in collaboration with Platform of Medical and Dental Society.
The course is unique in nature as it is not run merely as a multi-disciplinary revision and refreshers course. The programme incorporates foundations of Family Medicine, Practice Management and management of common conditions presented in General Practice among others. This course is the first step towards full specialisation to become a fully skilled Family Physician.
Objectives
To improve knowledge and skills of general practitioners to prepare them for independent Family Practice.
To provide a basic training in the domain of Family Medicine in order to prepare the trainees to enter into full specialisation.
To improve the health outcome of the practice population through upskilling of the trainees.
To provide trainees the skills of practice management to enhance their earning potential without compromising ethical standard.
To minimise the workload of specialist care through improving professional knowledge and skill of the practitioners.
To improve communication and patient management skills in at practice (chamber) level for those doctors who intend to specialise in other discipline but are still engaged in General Practice.
To instil a culture of lifelong learning among the trainee general practitioners.
